Accelerated Reader

Reading is one of the most important skills children will ever learn. The child who reads well will progress well at school and achieve personal growth. One of the core aims of our school literacy strategy is to develop a culture of reading and to keep pupils reading once they have learned to read.  However “just reading” is not enough. Children must understand what they are reading and understand it well.

In recent years we have been using the Accelerated Reading Program with 4th, 5th & 6th Classes. The positive feedback from pupils & parents has surpassed all our expectations. This computerised program has not only been specifically designed to improve pupils’ reading ability but also to encourage and nurture a love of reading that will continue into adulthood. The most important factor in accelerated reading growth is good comprehension.

The Accelerated Reader Program is an individualized reading program for children. It allows teachers to set goals, track growth and monitor comprehension. We encourage pupils to choose books within their reading level that are of interest to them and will also challenge them and develop their vocabulary. We have a good variety of books in our school library for students to select and we hope to continue to extend this. Pupils will choose books that fall within a given range and, when they have finished the book, they will take a computerised comprehension quiz that assesses their understanding of what they have read. This enables us as teachers to talk to children about their reading: what they have learnt and how we can continue to help them to develop as readers.
